The competition commenced in the early hours of Friday morning, where competitors were briefed on the module and allocated their work station. Once given the go ahead the group swiftly started measuring, mixing and laying their tiles meticulously, tending to every detail. During half-time Andrew Nunn, Managing Director of Davco Australia proudly announced and congratulated David Snodgrass for winning the national competition and claiming the title of Australia’s Best Tiler.
"The commitment shown by all competitors has been amazing,” explained Andrew Nunn, Managing Director, Davco Australia. “They’ve each sacrificed a days wages to earn a spot in the national final. Davco has always been committed to the tiling industry and development of skills. We are proud to be giving David the opportunity to represent Australia in the world championship event in China.”
Meet David Snodgrass - Australia’s Best Tiler from Queensland
David endured a four hour drive from Bundaberg to Brisbane to participate in Davco’s Regional Australia’s Best Tiler competition. Unbeknown to David, his fiancé had entered him in the competition after reading about it in the Tile Today magazine. As he only found out about the competition a few days before the event, he was so thrilled that he not only made but won the title for his region, beating such a high level of competitors.
David started tiling in 1997 and was inspired by his neighbour who was a tiler and would often ask him to help out when the apprentice was away. Whilst busy working in a tile store, David realised that he could help do repairs and handyman work for customers that other tilers didn’t want to do. Going back to study and obtaining his licence, David now has his own tiling business called, Q Tile Rite. With years of experience and a showcase of projects, including tiling the HIA Queensland Bathroom of the Year in 2007 with Bundy Homes, David has found that his work has shifted to the other end of the market, prestige properties and upscale projects.
When David isn’t working, he is spending quality time with his family. He supports the local community charity Red Collar Rescue, who finds homes for unwanted animals in particularly dogs and his business also sponsors the local indoor cricket team in which he plays.
